Bali

Yep i'm a very lucky boy, less than a month after returning from the U. k i set off with a posse of my Chums to celebrate my Birthday once again ! this time to Bali, i stayed again at 'Villa Bali Asri'
( see earlier post ).
I love Bali, i realised in similar way to the way i feel about Glastonbury i think its the unexpected , the surprises around every corner, there's always a new place visit and its history steeped in creativity and mystical beliefs, there is cutting edge design mixed with traditional craft and they certainly know how make a beautiful garden, oh and cocktail ! So here's some of my fav's some old, some new & some yet to be .....

Our first new discovery was the 'Cocoon Beach Club'   really stunning decor all white loungers and daybeds, beautiful lagoon pool, chilled out tunes, THE most delicious tapas menu ,   Oh and of course the obligatory lychee martini's ! With my beady stylist eye i noticed that the food was served in some really cute bitossi-esque pottery which i later discovered came from Kevala Ceramics.

Another place that had some great ceramics as well as some other cool home wares ,was a store called Platform 18/27, and just a few doors along, opposite the Corner Store ( still a popular hang out for bali designers and entrepreneur's ) is the Zuttion store, some great clothes their own label, shoes and the delicious Zucchini organic cafe,

another new hot hangout with... Ahem.. great food and cocktails was Sea Circus, really cute decor, love the graphics on the website too,

for a fab colonial style cream tea there was the Fabulous Biku tea house & Book exchange who also does an amazing breakfast !

Opposite Sea circus on the beach front was an enormous building site which is soon to be a brand new W resort which i furiously google'd when i got back to the villa, it looks like its shaping up to be state of the art resort in terms of interior design in the restaurant areas and foyer at least i love the way they will have used balinese craftsmanship to create the furniture light fittings & decoration etc .... Bali seems to be having a rebirth at the moment with heaps of development going on which is great for local community and its exciting in terms of architecture and design , but i can't help but think that some of the magic may just get lost altogether in a westernised concrete jungle. For a great list of great things to see and do in Seminyak grab a copy of the Yak magazine on arrival.

My heart belongs to Glastonbury.....

Soooo the end of this month saw me making a kind of pilgrimage back to the Uk to go back to the Glastonbury Festival where i spent many a long weekend having an AMAZING time in hayday & it was like i never left! my main reason for going to Glastonbury (which i hadn't been to for quite a few years now a couple of visits in the rain put me off for a while !) was because it was the festivals 40th birthday and it is also my own 40th Birthday this year so i thought i would rekindle my misspent youth & drawn to go back and experience it for one last time ...... or so i thought, I really find it hard to put into words my feelings for Glastonbury, quite what a dazzling spectacle for the senses the festival actually is, with something amazing to see and hear at at every turn, i have seen some of THE best music acts around at Glastonbury, nearly every live act i have ever wanted to see in fact. It has an incredible atmosphere / vibe call it what you will, with it's roots deep in spiritually and its massive Eco awareness, i believe it has to be the best music and performing arts festival in the world. When people talk about woodstock i can totally relate as i'm sure i'll be blathering on about it when i'm old and grey.
Surfice to say i think i'll be going back for a few more years yet, any way enough hippy rambling i could seriously go on all day ! so here's a few pics and links , snippets of the fun i had. My highlight acts were Florence and the Machine, The Temper trap, Editors, Groove Armada , LCD Sound system & All time Glastonbury favorite Orbital who even had a guest appearance by Dr who!

Is a pod house on Pandora with a Patricia Urquiola interior to much to ask ?

This journey of inspiration started with some images that took my fancy on the Coolhunter website it started with this image of the interior of the Mandarin Hotel in Barcelona designed by one of my top 5 fave designers Patricia Urquiola,   i then spotted this cool dwellings project from a company called Binishells originally developed in the 60's by Dr Dante Bini are now being relaunched as sustainable housing for the future, this triggered of something in my brain as i recalled an artist from my youth that i was totally into called Roger Dean   when i went to his site i also struck by the images there as it suddenly all came back to me and i realised why i loved the visual feast in the movie Avatar so very much, it was every part the worlds i inhabited in my mind, loved to look at in the Roger Dean art books i had (see also  Rodney Mathews) and my mums 'Yes' album covers, I also discovered a great selection of retro future images in a similar vein here Check out - Futura house , Underground Retreats, Cool 70's Interiors and join the debate on why James Cameron doesn't credit Roger Dean as a visual reference for Avatar HERE

TERRACE OUTDOOR LIVING

I am very pleased to announce the launch of Terrace Outdoor Living a web based (so far) company i have been working on with my very dear friend and recent Mum ! Bianca Moore.
Terrace stems from my background in horticulture and current experience in interiors and styling, Bianca has helped me out with the sewing of many cushions on shoots & after a particularly large one focused on outdoor entertaining, we decided we would start a business that catered for the outdoor ozzy lifestyle and decided to bring together an ever
growing selection of stylish and interesting pieces of furniture and accessories for outdoor use. The long term aim is to open a store that encompasses this idea & provide products that will help anyone create their own outdoor oasis. We have also coined the phrase "Extrerior decorators" & will be providing a product sourcing and styling service.......... watch this space !!

Animation now....

My new favorite thing to do in the morning whilst eating my breakfast ( after  checking my emails of course ! ) is to explore the wonders of you tube ... whilst  randomly browsing i stumbled upon the You Tube Screening Room   some great animation... My Favorite ones were MORE  RYAN  and WHEN DAY BREAKS

Now thats what i call gardening......

Coming from a horticultural background, nature and gardening constantly inspires me, none more so than Patric Blanc the inventor of the Vertical Garden or Le Mur Vegetal seen in action here at Jean Nouvelís Musée du quai Branly http://www.verticalgardenpatrickblanc.com

These stunning feats in horticulture seem to be the future of gardening, helping to green up our ever expanding cities and may go some distance to clean up the air as our natural world is diminishing.

Making headway in this area are a company called Atlantis Corp http://www.atlantiscorp.com.au with their 'Green city' technology and their concept for an Ecological house the   overal concept is "designing water management technology that not only meets human needs, such as preventing flooding, but also restoring natureís water purification system and conserving resources for future use".

For real future vision check out http://www.massstudies.com "Mass Studies was founded in 2003 by Minsuk Cho in Seoul, Korea, as a critical investigation of architecture in the context of mass production, intensely over-populated urban conditions, and other emergent cultural niches that define contemporary society"

And when the seas do finally rise and the land becomes uninhabitable........

Vincent Callebaut has all the answers http://www.vincent.callebaut.org
These guys and other inspiring architecture are featured in the September/October 08 issue of Vogue Living Magazine.

Amazing worlds in Snow Globes!

A friend showed me these incredible haunting works a few weeks ago......

by artist couple Walter Martin & Paloma Munoz from New york, they are exploring tiny little dramas  transforming them into miniature snow globes that depict an elaborate and intricate bleakness of emotions and populated by all sorts of people and creatures. A world in everlasting winter, magical and scary and at the same time somehow funny! I was transfixed. Check out the website http://www.martin-munoz.com  just amazing, if not a little creepy!

Check it out !

At last after wittering on for ages about doing my website ( and bagging blogs in general ha ! ) here it is !!!  its a work in  progress so bear with me ........Sooooo....  heres my first proper entry and although its a little old news.... it was a great experience.. i was asked  by Designer Rugs on behalf of House & Garden along with all the leading homewares titles to create a room set to compliment a rug from the a range designed by Australian Fashion designer Akira ! ... We each had to choose just one item from six different stores to create a room set or instalation around the rug to be displayed  in the Moma Gallery at circular quay along with my competitors - rivals. It was challenging as I usually get free reign to choose more than one item from as many stores as I like but it was a great experience and I was really please with the results...
